How many times do we end up going to the supermarket to buy just one thing and walk out with a half-full cart, maybe with products we didn’t even need? Partly while wandering the aisles, we might have thought of buying things we hadn’t considered before, but there are techniques borrowed from marketing psychology that supermarkets use to make us buy as much as possible. Today, I’ll tell you about 10 of them, so you can be aware of them the next time you go shopping.

The shelf marketing, as it’s called, is the set of techniques used to influence our buying behavior, make us stay in the supermarkets as long as possible, and make us leave with a cart full of products. For this purpose, every detail is studied ad hoc.

The path to follow, the arrangement of the products, the music… Now, this shouldn’t surprise us too much; it makes sense that a private entity, a company, wants to pursue its interests and sell as much as possible. However, what we can do is be aware of these techniques to be less susceptible and become more mindful consumers.
